I am finally taking the time to write my thoughts down about Iceland. I still don’t think I fully understand how to put this amazing country into words, but I will try.
My first thoughts when driving through the country side were words like unique, quirky, and one of a kind.
The volcanic craters forming together, looking like creatures taking a nap, spreading across miles and miles of land to the side of the road. Overgrown with moss and resting under falling rain and wind the speed of the cars, I was just so facinated with it all.
My friend Clara and I rented a camper van, the only real way to explore Iceland, and took off for Skógafoss Waterfall. This is the one place that I had seen in pictures and was dying to see. It was more grand in person. I always get humbled when seeing grand places, and this was one that shook me down to my core. Walking up to the base of it, taking a shower in waterfall mist, I could feel my spirit trembling with excitement. I felt small. I enjoy being in places that make me feel small. Like resting under oak trees that triumph over me, or places like this waterfall that surrounded me with wonder. Places that put you back in your tiny old human shoes and remind you that you just can’t do it all. Places that whisper to your soul SURRENDER. And in this place, being dusted with waterfall mist, I felt just that. I was reminded, to be courageous in my pursuits, but also to be humble.
We continued on, stopping at random pull offs to take it all in, or to take in as much we could. Our next stop being the black sand beach in Vík. The contrast between the black sand and the white water licking its shores was beautiful. The wind was wild that day and the waves were howling like wolves. The cliffs here were magical, as you can guess. Jutting up to form steps. There simply isn’t anything like it.
We made camp that night in Vík, eating store bought hot dogs and accidentally buying mini pizza bread to use as buns. We roasted it all over our little propane fire, and snuggled in for the night. We watched Friends, read books, all while the wind rocked the van through the night.
The next morning was my favorite. We woke to the sun warming the ground, no rain in site. The golden morning light dripping over the cliffs like honey. It was so calming, yet invigorating all at the same time.
Our last full day in Iceland we ventured further on to visit the Glacier Lagoon. With a few random stops in between at places I simply can’t pronounce. The closer we got to the glacier the less green and more snow covered mountains we saw. The terrain in Iceland is legendary. When we finally arrived I was in awe. The electric blue waters freckled with floating ice burgs took my breath away. It was all so different from anything I had ever laid eyes on.
My summary of Iceland is that it is an adventurous country, with more to it than meets the eye. It is a place that I am dying to go back to and take in more of. The adventures of Iceland adventures for me, have just begun.
